The Flagg Family’s Story
Meet the Flagg Family. Netta Flagg has called Gainesville, Florida home for 41 years. Born and raised here, she’s built a life rooted in love, resilience, and quiet determination. Today, as a custodian with the Alachua County School Board working at Howard Bishop Middle School, Netta brings the same commitment and care to her job that she brings to her family. Her life’s dream has always been clear: to become a homeowner, to be a great mother, and to build a strong, united family. And now, through Habitat for Humanity, that lifelong dream is finally becoming a reality.
Netta will be moving into her new home with her two youngest children, Gigi (16) and Roy-El (10). Describing them as “respectful, loving, and caring,” Netta beams with pride as she talks about the unique personalities that make her children who they are. Gigi is creative and ambitious, with dreams of owning her own salon where she can do hair and lashes. Roy-El is full of energy and determination, already chasing his dream of becoming a track and field superstar.
Together, the Flagg family finds joy in the simple moments—cooking meals together, watching movies, playing games, and listening to music. Their current living conditions, however, have often made peace and safety feel out of reach. Netta describes the challenges they’ve faced: late-night disturbances, neighborhood violence, and an environment that’s become harder and harder to call “home.”
It was Netta’s sister who first told her about the Habitat for Humanity program. From the moment she applied, Netta held onto hope—but when she got the call that she had been approved, her emotions overflowed. “Excited, delightful, happy, and nervous all at once,” she recalls. Since joining the Habitat program, Netta has embraced every part of the experience. She’s found empowerment in learning, building, and planning for the future. Most of all, she looks forward to the moment she steps into her own space—a place where she and her children can finally exhale and thrive.
Her favorite room will be the kitchen. It’s more than a place to cook; it’s where memories will be made, laughter will echo, and traditions will be passed down. It’s where love is stirred into every meal. Homeownership, for Netta, represents something far greater than a roof and four walls. It’s responsibility. It’s pride. It’s proof to her children that perseverance and faith can build something lasting.
In her own words, the three that best describe this milestone are: “One proud mother.” This new home will be a place of safety, joy, and new memories, where Netta can continue building the strong, loving family she has always dreamed of. It marks a new chapter filled with pride, purpose, and the promise of a brighter future.
