Affordable Housing Grant from FHLBank Atlanta and Radiant Credit Union

Alachua Habitat for Humanity Receives $250,000 Affordable Housing Grant from FHLBank Atlanta and Radiant Credit Union

Gainesville – Alachua Habitat for Humanity has been awarded a $250,000 Affordable Housing Program (AHP) grant through a partnership with Radiant Credit Union and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (FHLBank Atlanta). The grant will support the construction of 10 new single-family homes in Alachua County, helping make homeownership a reality for low-income families in the community.

The funds, which are sourced from FHLBank Atlanta’s AHP General Fund and distributed through Radiant Credit Union, will be used to directly reduce the cost of homeownership by providing down payment assistance for 10 qualified homebuyers in Habitat’s Homeownership Program. The selected homes will be located throughout East Gainesville and the City of Alachua and will be built using a combination of volunteer labor, community donations, and homeowner participation.

“This funding is transformative. It’s not just for our organization, but for the 10 families who will achieve the dream of homeownership because of it,” said Kristine Thompson, Interim Executive Director of Alachua Habitat for Humanity. “We’re deeply grateful to Radiant Credit Union and FHLBank Atlanta for investing in affordable housing in our community. With their support, we can build more than homes. We can build lasting change for generations to come.”

Each future homeowner completes 250 hours of sweat equity, participates in financial and homeownership education, and purchases their home through an affordable mortgage. Of the 10 homes included in this grant, the majority are on lots that were donated, helping further reduce construction costs and extend the impact of the funding.

“We are honored to partner with Alachua Habitat for Humanity to help make homeownership a reality for more families in our community,” said Tom Barnard, President & CEO of Radiant Credit Union. “This project reflects the very heart of our mission—to uplift lives and build brighter financial futures.” This grant represents a significant investment in both individual families and the broader effort to address Alachua County’s growing need for safe, affordable housing.

In December 2024, FHLBank Atlanta selected Alachua Habitat for Humanity as one of 66 recipients of its AHP General Fund, which contributed a total of $55 million in grants to support the development or rehabilitation of 4,200 affordable housing units.

“Our members like Radiant Credit Union are engrained in their communities, going well beyond providing financial services to make a meaningful difference,” said Kirk Malmberg, President and CEO of FHLBank Atlanta. “We are pleased to see these funds support Alachua Habitat for Humanity and its mission to build safe and affordable homes and help local residents to become homeowners.”
