Women Build #10 - Tonya's House
Tonya's home dedication took place on February 25, 2018
Everyone was all smiles as Tonya received the keys to her new home! Representatives from sponsors Publix and the City of High Springs were there to celebrate with the rest of the Alachua Habitat and Alachua Women Build supporters, volunteers, and staff. Tonya's house is the 134th Habitat house in Alachua County and it's the 10th one build by the amazing women of Alachua Women Build. Tonya's family is already close with their new neighbors and are excited to move in to their very own home!
Tonya, recently widowed, currently lives in a trailer park with her two children. Her adult son Wallace joined the military and Tonya says that he wants to attend the University of Florida when he returns to pursue a degree in Political Science. Wallace is a very sociable person and enjoys spending time with his friends. Tonya’s second child is middle-schooler Teasia. Teasia’s favorite subject in school is science and she is always full of energy. “She absolutely loves to bug me” Tonya says and laughs. The Scott family also has a German Shepard named Abby.
Tonya loves to spend time talking and joking with her children. When she’s alone she enjoys to go out and eat or go shopping. She works as a full-time housekeeper at UF where she has been employed for over 10 years.
When Tonya finished her 200 sweat equity hours it took her some time to find just the right lot for her home. She says that it has to be perfect, “this is a once in a lifetime opportunity”, and her patience paid off. She is currently partnering with Alachua Women Build building her future home in High Springs. She looks forward to having her own yard where Teasia and Abby can play. Tonya lights up and says “it will be my very own”.
