Cheryl - women build #12
Sunlight slips through the branches of the big oaks as you drive down the road to Cheryl’s house site. You feel as though you’re in a world gone by—and in a sense you are, as Cheryl’s family settled on this land more than 75 years ago.
Cheryl and her teen daughters, Liana and Layla, are excited about moving into their own house this summer. Liana and Layla are both in middle school and attend Oak View Middle School in Newberry. Liana, like her Mom, loves to read. Layla is all about sports, especially volleyball and basketball.
Cheryl has been employed at the Dollar General Warehouse for ten years. She works in the “re-pack department” where she and her co-workers box up products to be sent to the stores. She has to be there at 6AM (!) but she gets off at 4:30 pm, so she has evening time with the girls.
The thing Cheryl is most looking forward to when she moves into her new house is painting. She loves to paint; she finds it relaxing and satisfying. She recently fixed up her grandparents’ home in Archer and says it looks really good. She painted all the rooms and even laid tile in the bathroom. Liana and Layla want to paint their bedrooms special colors, which are ever-changing as they get new ideas and imagine what their rooms will look like.
Cheryl is grateful to a friend who introduced her to Habitat’s Homeownership Program. Some of Cheryl’s qualifying hours were spent volunteering on Alachua Women Build’s House #9.Now she is working alongside women volunteers to build her own home, Alachua Women Build’s 12th in the county.
