Office Volunteers
We currently have two different categories of long term office volunteers that are needed: Receptionists and Office Assistants.
· Volunteer Receptionists – help answer phones, take messages, check voice mail, and direct walk-ins or regular clients to the correct office/staff person. Some light office tasks may be given. Days/hours volunteer Receptionists are needed are: Mon. – Fri., from 9AM till 5PM. Volunteers can take 2 or 3 hour shifts, or volunteer a whole day or half day.
· Volunteer Office Assistants – help with filing, typing memos, data entry, preparing mailings, assisting the Volunteer Coordinator, the Office Manager, or the Resource Development Director with various, light tasks, as well as help answer phones. Tasks may include assisting with fund raisers or volunteer fairs, if you are interested. Days/hours volunteers are needed: Mon., Wed., and Fri., between the hours of 9AM and 5PM. Volunteers can take 2 hour shifts or volunteer a whole day or half day.
We need long term volunteers for store clerks and sorting room. Store sells donated, used, and recycled household items, as well as building materials. Volunteers are needed for sales, merchandise display, pricing, donation pick-up, and other tasks. Store hours are Mon. – Sat., from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. Volunteers can work in shifts of 2 or 3 hours, or volunteer a whole day or half day. Bring a friend!
No experience is necessary to volunteer in construction. All you need is to have a willingness to help out and a teachable spirit. If you do have experience, we need experienced volunteers to serve as crew leaders and house supervisors.
Week day builds: We will schedule groups of volunteers for construction Tuesday through Friday, from 9AM till around 1 or 2PM, during the week. The most volunteers we take each day are 15 volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer to build on a week day, contact the volunteer coordinator to schedule a time. Please schedule week day builds at least three weeks in advance.
Saturday builds: Saturday builds start at 8:30AM and go till about 2:30PM. Volunteers should be on signed in before the 8:30 safety meeting. Saturdays are our most popular day, and when the school year is in session, Saturdays for an entire semester are often booked before the semester begins. If you know you will want to volunteer on one or more Saturdays during the school year, you should schedule the dates well in advance. The maximum group size we take on Saturday is 30 people.
Tasks for construction sites vary depending on the stage of construction for a given house. We typically subcontract out HVAC, plumbing, insulation, and most concrete work. Volunteers usually participate in framing the exterior and interior walls, placing trusses, decking the roof, hanging siding, installing soffit and fascia, hanging drywall, painting, installing doors and windows, base boards and trim, cabinets and counters, installing flooring, tiling shower walls, landscaping, and clean-up. Don’t feel bad if you’re not familiar with all these terms. You will certainly learn! J
